Sagittarius season is the roughly 30-day stretch each year when the Sun travels through the zodiac sign of Sagittarius. In 2026 it begins early on November 22 and lasts until the Sun enters Capricorn on December 21. Astrologers describe it as the season of the open road and the big question: widening your horizons, telling the truth and aiming at something worth believing in.
Maybe you have already felt the shift coming. After the depth of Scorpio season, the mood lifts. You want fresh air, new ideas, a trip on the calendar, a conversation that goes somewhere. You are not imagining it, and nothing is wrong with you. This guide covers the dates, the themes, what each Sun sign may notice, and simple rituals and journaling prompts for the month.
Come as you are. You do not need to believe in astrology to use a season as a gentle invitation to look up, look ahead and ask what you are aiming at.
Key Takeaways
- Sagittarius season 2026 runs from November 22 to December 21. The Sun enters Sagittarius about 2:23 AM Eastern on November 22 and moves into Capricorn about 3:50 PM Eastern on December 21.

- The 2026 sky includes a Full Moon in Gemini on November 24, a New Moon in Sagittarius on December 8 and Jupiter turning retrograde on December 12.
- Every Sun sign feels the season in a different area of life. Use the twelve short readings below to find yours.
- Astrology is a mirror, not a verdict. The season points a light; the choices are yours.
What Is Sagittarius Season?
The Western zodiac divides the Sun’s yearly path into twelve signs of 30 degrees each. A zodiac season is the stretch of about a month when the Sun is in front of one of those signs. People born during that window are said to have that Sun sign, but the season belongs to everyone, because the whole sky shifts its emphasis for a few weeks. If you want the full picture of signs, planets and houses first, start with our guide to astrology, signs and birth charts.
Sagittarius is the ninth sign. According to Wikipedia, it is part of the fire trigon with Aries and Leo, and it is the fourth of the mutable signs, the ones associated with a changeable quality. Traditional astrology gives Sagittarius to Jupiter, the planet of growth, meaning and good fortune. The sign is pictured as an archer, or as a centaur with a drawn bow. Sagittarius season is the last full sign of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and carries us to the winter solstice. In the Southern Hemisphere the same season arrives in late spring, with the weather reversed and the meaning the same.
Because Sagittarius follows Scorpio, the two seasons read like a pair. Scorpio goes down and in. Sagittarius turns around and looks to the horizon. If you have just come through our Scorpio season guide, think of this as the next step: you have faced what was hidden, and now you choose a direction. In the sky, the arrow of the Sagittarius constellation even points toward Antares, the bright star in neighboring Scorpius, according to Wikipedia.

When Is Sagittarius Season in 2026?
In 2026, the Sun enters Sagittarius on Sunday, November 22, at about 2:23 AM Eastern, according to Cafe Astrology and Astrolis. It leaves for Capricorn on Monday, December 21, at about 3:50 PM Eastern, according to Astrolis. That is also the moment of the December solstice, the start of astrological winter in the Northern Hemisphere. Because the exact moment shifts with your time zone, places east of the United States may see the changeover a few hours later in their local day.
| Event | Date in 2026 | Time (US Eastern) |
|---|---|---|
| Sagittarius season begins (Sun enters Sagittarius) | Sunday, November 22 | About 2:23 AM |
| Sagittarius season ends (Sun enters Capricorn) | Monday, December 21 | About 3:50 PM |
The rule of thumb is simple: Sagittarius season starts around November 21 or 22 and ends around December 21 or 22, and the dates move by a day from year to year. These dates use the tropical zodiac, the system most Western astrologers use. Vedic (sidereal) astrology uses a different calendar, so in that tradition the Sun’s time in Sagittarius, called Dhanu, falls later, beginning around mid-December. Our guides to Vedic astrology and the difference between sidereal and tropical astrology explain why the two calendars differ.

The Sky This Sagittarius Season (2026)
Every season has its own weather. Here is what is on the 2026 calendar, based on published ephemeris data from Astrolis (all times US Eastern).
| Date | Event | Why people watch it |
|---|---|---|
| November 22 | Sun enters Sagittarius | The season begins and the mood turns outward |
| November 24 | Full Moon in Gemini (about 2 degrees) | Opposes the Sagittarius Sun: information and curiosity meet belief and big-picture meaning. This is also the November Full Moon often called the Beaver Moon |
| November 25 | Mars enters Virgo | Energy turns toward details, habits and practical work |
| December 6 | Mercury enters Sagittarius | Thinking and speaking become bolder and more philosophical |
| December 8 | New Moon in Sagittarius (about 17 degrees) | The traditional moment to set intentions about direction, learning and travel |
| December 12 | Jupiter stations retrograde in Leo | Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius, turns inward until April 12, 2027 |
| December 21 | Sun enters Capricorn, December solstice | Season ends; the year turns toward winter and structure |
The Full Moon pairs naturally with our guide to the Beaver Moon, and the solstice with our guide to the winter solstice. Mercury is not retrograde during this season. It turned direct on November 13, just before the season begins, and Astrolis lists no new retrograde station in December. If you want the backstory on that cycle, see our Mercury retrograde guide. The Jupiter turn on December 12 is a gentle reminder that growth can be an inner project as well as an outer one.
The Themes of Sagittarius Season
Every sign has a flavor. Sagittarius’s is expansion, and its gift is meaning. Here are the themes astrologers most often connect with this season.

Truth and meaning
Sagittarius asks the plain question: what do I actually believe, and does my life reflect it? Wikipedia notes that the archer is said never to miss the mark, which is why old astrology linked the sign with prophecy and seers. You do not need to take that literally to use it. The season is a good time to name your values and check them against your calendar.
Freedom and exploration
Fire signs move, and Sagittarius moves furthest. This is the season of road trips, long walks, new places and new ideas. If you cannot travel, explore in other ways: a new route home, a different kind of book, a conversation with someone whose life looks nothing like yours.
Faith and optimism
Jupiter, the traditional ruler of Sagittarius, is the planet astrologers link with trust, generosity and the sense that things can work out. Sagittarius season is a natural moment to practice hope as a discipline, not a mood: choose one thing you can trust, one thing you can give, and one thing you are willing to try.
Learning, teaching and the long view
The ninth house, which Sagittarius echoes, is the traditional home of higher learning, philosophy and teaching. Many people feel pulled to study something, start a course or share what they know. Our perennial philosophy entry and the yogi philosophy study guide and workbook are good places to begin.
Honest words
Sagittarius is famous in astrology for plain speech. That can be refreshing or it can sting. A useful practice for the season: say what is true, and say it with warmth. The same arrow that points to the truth can wound if it is released without care.

Astrologer Jorge Roque talks through the planetary cycles he sees from 2026 to 2032, free will, and the birth chart as a blueprint. Useful context for the sky this season. Read the show notes.
The Archer, the Centaur and the Arrow

The symbol of Sagittarius changes depending on where you look. On the old star maps, it is usually a centaur, half human and half horse, drawing a bow. According to Wikipedia, some Greek writers identified the archer as the wise centaur Chiron, tutor to heroes such as Jason, while Eratosthenes identified the figure as the satyr Crotus, credited with inventing archery. Wikipedia also notes that when the sign is pictured as an archer, it is classed as human, and when pictured as a centaur, as beast, with no practical difference for interpretation.
| Image | What it can represent | How it may show up this season |
|---|---|---|
| The bow | Tension, patience and focus before release | Draw back before you decide. Clarity first, then action |
| The arrow | Direction and purpose | Name one goal and point everything toward it |
| The centaur | Body and mind, instinct and intellect, joined | Notice where your wild side and your wise side agree |
| The horizon | The next chapter | Look past the immediate problem and ask where this is heading |
Jupiter: The Planet Behind the Season

In astrology, Jupiter is the largest planet of the solar system and the traditional symbol of expansion, good fortune and wisdom, in the traditional language of astrology. Jupiter will turn retrograde in Leo on December 12, 2026, and stay retrograde until April 12, 2027, according to Astrolis. Many astrologers read a Jupiter retrograde as a time to grow inward: review your beliefs, deepen what you have started and let your vision mature before you push it outward.

If you do not yet know your rising sign, our guide to the rising sign shows how to find it. Treat all of this as prompts, not predictions.

The Shadow Side: When Sagittarius Season Feels Hard
Astrologers often describe a few classic Sagittarius shadows: restlessness, overpromising, blunt words and the urge to escape what feels uncomfortable by moving on. The season also overlaps with the busiest weeks of the year in many places, including Thanksgiving in the United States on November 26 and the run-up to the December holidays. That can stretch the fire sign energy thin.
A few grounded ways to work with it: choose fewer commitments and keep them; say no without a long explanation; and ask whether you are moving toward something or away from something. If the answer is away, the shadow work prompts below can help. If the holidays bring up grief, you are not alone.
Simple Rituals for Sagittarius Season
Nothing here requires special tools. The point is to give the season a shape you can feel. Pick one or two.

1. Write your intention on an arrow
Take a strip of paper and write one clear aim for the next year in the present tense, such as “I am learning to teach what I know.” Fold it, place it on your altar or desk, and look at it each morning. For a deeper practice with intentions, see our entry on vision boards and manifestation.
2. New Moon intentions on December 8
On the night of the New Moon in Sagittarius, light a candle and write three short intentions about direction, learning or travel. Keep them private and read them again at the December 21 solstice.
3. A small pilgrimage
Choose a place within walking distance that feels meaningful, such as a hill, a river, a quiet street or a place of worship, and walk there with no phone and no podcast. Notice what you notice. Many traditions use a walk with intention as a way to reset the mind.
4. Learn one new thing
Sagittarius loves a student. Pick a topic you have been curious about and spend twenty minutes on it every day for a week. You could try one of our audio courses or an audiobook on a long drive.
5. A candle for gratitude and generosity
Fire is the element of this season. Light a candle safely, name three things you are grateful for, and then do one generous thing for someone this week. Generosity is the traditional gift of Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius.

Sagittarius Season in Other Traditions
In Vedic astrology, the Sun enters Sagittarius, known as Dhanu, around mid-December, and the sidereal zodiac places that month about three to four weeks later than the Western one. Our podcast conversations with Dr. Katy Jane and Vish Chatterji explore the Vedic view. In the Chinese system, elements and animals work differently, and our guide to Chinese zodiac elements explains how. The season ends at the December solstice, one of the oldest turning points in the year, covered in our winter solstice guide.

Sagittarius season is the roughly 30-day period each year when the Sun moves through the zodiac sign Sagittarius. Astrologers link it with travel, truth, optimism, learning and big-picture thinking.
When is Sagittarius season in 2026?
Sagittarius season 2026 runs from November 22 to December 21. The Sun enters Sagittarius about 2:23 AM Eastern on November 22 and enters Capricorn about 3:50 PM Eastern on December 21.
When does Sagittarius season end?
It ends when the Sun enters Capricorn, which happens on December 21 in 2026, the day of the December solstice. In most years the changeover falls on December 21 or 22.
What is Sagittarius season about?
Astrologers describe it as a season of expansion: asking what you believe, exploring new places and ideas, speaking honestly and choosing a direction. It tends to feel lighter and more outward than Scorpio season.
Is Sagittarius season a good or bad time?
Neither. It is a season with its own flavor. Many people feel hopeful and curious, and the shadow side can be restlessness, overpromising and blunt words. Your choices matter far more than any planetary position.
What element, modality and planet belong to Sagittarius?
Sagittarius is a mutable fire sign, and traditional astrology gives it to Jupiter. It is the ninth sign of the zodiac and is pictured as an archer or a centaur.
When is the New Moon in Sagittarius in 2026?
The New Moon in Sagittarius falls on December 8, 2026, at about 17 degrees of Sagittarius, according to Astrolis. Many people use it to set intentions about direction, learning and travel.

No. Mercury turned direct on November 13, 2026, just before the season begins, and Astrolis lists no new Mercury retrograde station in December. Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius, turns retrograde on December 12.
How does Sagittarius season affect each zodiac sign?
Each Sun sign feels it in a different area of life, such as travel and belief for Aries, partnership for Gemini or identity for Sagittarius. The twelve short readings above cover every sign.
Do I need to be a Sagittarius to feel Sagittarius season?
No. People born from about November 22 to December 21 are said to have a Sagittarius Sun, but the whole sky shifts its emphasis during the season, and everyone can use it as a prompt to reflect. You do not need to believe in astrology to try the rituals.
How is Sagittarius season different in Vedic astrology?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, so the Sun enters Sagittarius, called Dhanu, around mid-December instead of November 22. The meaning of the sign is similar, but the calendar is different.
How can I make the most of Sagittarius season?
Try one or two simple practices: write an intention on an arrow, set New Moon intentions on December 8, take a walk with no phone, learn one new thing, or light a candle for gratitude. Choose what feels easy to keep.
