Your Chinese zodiac element is the second half of your sign. Most people know their animal, such as the Dragon or the Rabbit, but every year also carries one of five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. Together they make a Wood Dragon, a Fire Horse or a Water Rabbit, and that pairing repeats only once every 60 years.

To find your element, look at the last digit of your birth year. Years ending in 0 or 1 are Metal, 2 or 3 are Water, 4 or 5 are Wood, 6 or 7 are Fire, and 8 or 9 are Earth. If your birthday falls in January or February, check the date of Chinese New Year first, because the zodiac year begins then and not on January 1.

This guide gives you the lookup tables, all 60 animal and element combinations, what each element means, how the five elements feed and check one another, and how it all connects to feng shui and Bazi. The idea we return to at Next Level Soul runs through it. The power is within you. An element is a map of tendencies, and you choose the path.

Key Takeaways

  • The five elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water.
  • Your element comes from the last digit of your birth year, adjusted for Chinese New Year.
  • Animal and element combine into a 60-year cycle of 60 unique pairings.
  • Even years are Yang, odd years are Yin.
  • The elements generate and control one another, which is the basis of compatibility and feng shui.

What Are the Chinese Zodiac Elements?

The five elements, called Wuxing in Chinese, are a way of describing how energy moves and changes. They are not the physical substances. Wood is growth and expansion, Fire is transformation and heat, Earth is stability and nourishment, Metal is structure and refinement, and Water is flow and depth.

In the Chinese zodiac, the twelve animals cycle every twelve years and the five elements cycle every ten years, because each element covers two years in a row, one Yang and one Yin. The two cycles meet again after 60 years. That span is known as the sexagenary cycle.

How to Find Your Chinese Zodiac Element

Use the last digit of your birth year.

Last digit of birth yearElement
0 or 1Metal
2 or 3Water
4 or 5Wood
6 or 7Fire
8 or 9Earth

Then check the Chinese New Year date for your birth year. It falls on a different day each year, anywhere from about January 21 to February 20. If you were born before it, use the previous year’s element and animal.

The Five Elements and What They Mean

Wood

Wood belongs to spring, the east and the color green. It is the energy of growth, vision and renewal. Wood people are often described as creative, generous, curious and flexible, with a strong urge to improve things. The shadow side is overextension and impatience. Years ending in 4 or 5 are Wood.

Fire

Fire belongs to summer, the south and the color red. It is passion, warmth, joy and leadership. Fire people are described as charismatic, expressive and quick to act. The shadow side is burning out or overheating a conversation. Years ending in 6 or 7 are Fire, which makes 2026 a Fire Horse year.

Earth

Earth belongs to late summer, the center and the color yellow. It is stability, nourishment and trust. Earth people are described as practical, loyal and caring, the ones others lean on. The shadow side is worry and holding on too tightly. Years ending in 8 or 9 are Earth.

Metal

Metal belongs to autumn, the west and the color white or metallic. It is clarity, discipline and refinement. Metal people are described as determined, principled and precise. The shadow side is rigidity and grief held too long. Years ending in 0 or 1 are Metal.

Water

Water belongs to winter, the north and the colors blue and black. It is wisdom, intuition and flow. Water people are described as perceptive, adaptable and deep. The shadow side is fear and withdrawal. Years ending in 2 or 3 are Water.

Yin and Yang Years

Each element appears in two consecutive years. The first, an even-numbered year, is Yang, and the second, an odd-numbered year, is Yin. Yang is usually described as outward, bold and active. Yin is described as inward, gentle and receptive. A Yang Wood Dragon (2024) and a Yin Wood Snake (2025) share the Wood element but express it differently.

How the Elements Interact: Generating and Controlling Cycles

The elements support and check each other in two cycles. Many teachers use them to talk about compatibility, health, timing and the balance of a space.

CycleHow it works
GeneratingWood feeds Fire. Fire creates Earth (ash). Earth bears Metal. Metal carries Water. Water nourishes Wood.
ControllingWood parts Earth. Earth dams Water. Water quenches Fire. Fire melts Metal. Metal cuts Wood.

The controlling cycle is not “bad.” A river needs banks, and fire needs something to hold it. Tension between elements is often where the learning happens.

The Fixed Element of Each Animal

Besides the year element, each animal has its own element tied to its place in the twelve-branch system. Some astrologers read both. A Wood Horse, for example, is Wood by year and Fire by animal.

The 12 Animals and Their Natural Element

Your year element sits on top of your animal’s own nature. Here is a short portrait of each animal, based on the traditional descriptions. Read it as a mirror and keep what rings true.

Rat (Water)

Quick-witted, resourceful and charming. Rats read a room fast and spot opportunity early. The growth edge is learning to rest and to trust that there is enough.

Ox (Earth)

Steady, patient and reliable. Oxen finish what they start. The growth edge is flexibility, since the same steadiness can harden into stubbornness.

Tiger (Wood)

Bold, brave and magnetic. Tigers lead from the front and love a challenge. The growth edge is patience, and letting others set the pace sometimes.

Rabbit (Wood)

Gentle, graceful and diplomatic. Rabbits seek harmony and have a strong aesthetic sense. The growth edge is speaking up instead of avoiding conflict.

Dragon (Earth)

Confident, energetic and visionary. Dragons think big and inspire others. The growth edge is listening, and letting the details matter.

Snake (Fire)

Wise, intuitive and private. Snakes think deeply and notice what others miss. The growth edge is openness, and sharing what they know.

Horse (Fire)

Free-spirited, warm and adventurous. Horses love movement and honest connection. The growth edge is commitment and staying with something past the first rush.

Goat (Earth)

Creative, kind and sensitive. Goats bring beauty and compassion to a room. The growth edge is self-trust and making decisions without waiting for permission.

Monkey (Metal)

Clever, playful and inventive. Monkeys solve problems with humor. The growth edge is depth, and following one idea through.

Rooster (Metal)

Observant, organized and proud. Roosters bring order and speak plainly. The growth edge is softening criticism, of themselves and of others.

Dog (Earth)

Loyal, honest and protective. Dogs stand by the people they love. The growth edge is releasing worry and trusting the future.

Pig (Water)

Generous, sincere and easygoing. Pigs enjoy life and give freely. The growth edge is boundaries, and saying no without guilt.

2026: The Year of the Fire Horse

2026 is a Fire Horse year, and it comes around only once every 60 years. Horse is movement and independence, and Fire is passion and transformation. Together, the traditional reading is a fast, bold year of change that favors action over waiting. If you are working with the energy, channel it into something you care about and rest on purpose, because Fire burns quickly.

Element Compatibility in Plain Language

When two people share a generating relationship, such as Wood and Fire, or Water and Wood, the traditional view is that one naturally feeds the other. When two elements sit in the controlling relationship, such as Water and Fire, the pairing brings friction and a lot of room to grow. Two people of the same element understand each other quickly and can also amplify each other’s blind spots. None of this decides whether a relationship works. It simply gives you words for the dynamic you already feel.

Common Mistakes When Finding Your Element

  • Ignoring Chinese New Year. Birthdays in January and early February often belong to the previous zodiac year.
  • Mixing up the year element with the animal’s element. They are two different layers.
  • Using the Gregorian year only. The Chinese calendar follows the moon and sun together.
  • Treating it as fixed fate. The element describes tendencies, and you steer.

Chinese Elements vs Western Astrology Elements

The two systems share a word but not a structure. Western astrology has four elements (fire, earth, air and water) shared across the twelve signs, as covered in our astrology guide. Chinese astrology has five (wood, fire, earth, metal and water), tied to the year, the season, the direction and more. You can hold both without conflict, since each speaks about a different layer.

Beyond the Year: Bazi and the Four Pillars

Your zodiac animal and element are the year pillar only. In Bazi, or the Four Pillars of Destiny, a full chart also looks at the month, day and hour of birth. Joey Yap, who teaches Chinese metaphysics, explains on the show that Bazi means the four pillars of destiny, eight characters that make up a chart. He also says the true purpose of metaphysics is to help you live a fulfilled and happy life, which is a good compass for any element reading.

Elements, Feng Shui and Your Home

The same five elements guide feng shui. Wood shows up as plants and tall shapes, Fire as warm light and red tones, Earth as stone and square shapes, Metal as round forms and white or gray, Water as flowing shapes and dark blues. If you want to bring a missing element into your space, our feng shui guide walks through the five elements and the bagua room by room.

How to Use Your Element Wisely

  • Read it as a mirror. Notice where your element’s strengths already show up in your life.
  • Work with the shadow side. If you are Fire, build in rest. If you are Water, build in connection.
  • Balance your space. Add the element you feel you lack through color, plants, water or light.
  • Keep your own authority. The element is a lens. You are the one looking through it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the five elements in the Chinese zodiac?

The five elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each Chinese zodiac year carries one of them alongside its animal, so every year is a pairing such as Fire Horse or Wood Dragon.

How do I find my Chinese zodiac element?

Check the last digit of your birth year. Years ending in 0 or 1 are Metal, 2 or 3 are Water, 4 or 5 are Wood, 6 or 7 are Fire, and 8 or 9 are Earth. If you were born in January or February, check whether your birthday fell before Chinese New Year, because the zodiac year starts then.

What is my Chinese zodiac element if I was born in 1990?

1990 ends in 0, so the element is Metal, and the animal is the Horse. Someone born in 1990 after Chinese New Year is a Metal Horse. A birthday in January or early February 1990 before the new year may belong to the Earth Snake year of 1989.

What is the Chinese zodiac element for 2026?

2026 is a Fire Horse year. Fire Horse years return every 60 years, so the previous one was 1966.

How often does the same element and animal repeat?

Every 60 years. The twelve animals and five elements combine into a 60-year cycle called the sexagenary cycle, so a Wood Dragon year returns after sixty years.

What is the difference between yin and yang years?

Even-numbered years such as 2024 are Yang, and odd-numbered years such as 2025 are Yin. Yang is usually described as outward and active, Yin as inward and receptive. Each element appears once as Yang and once as Yin in a ten-year span.

Is the Chinese zodiac element the same as the animal’s own element?

No. Every animal has a fixed element of its own (the Rat is Water and the Horse is Fire, for example), while the year element changes with the calendar. Some practitioners look at both together.

Which Chinese zodiac elements get along?

In the generating cycle, Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water and Water nourishes Wood. Elements that support each other are described as harmonious, while elements in the controlling cycle create tension that can also teach.

Are Chinese zodiac elements the same as Western astrology elements?

No. Western astrology uses four elements (fire, earth, air, water) tied to the twelve signs. Chinese astrology uses five (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) tied to years, directions, seasons and other cycles.

Do the elements decide my personality?

Teachers use the elements as a map of tendencies, not a verdict. The element shows a way of moving through life and your choices still decide what you do with it.

What is Bazi?

Bazi, or Four Pillars of Destiny, is a Chinese system that reads the year, month, day and hour of birth as four pairs of characters. Joey Yap describes Bazi as eight characters that make up a chart. The zodiac animal and element are only the year pillar.

Does the Chinese zodiac element matter for feng shui?

Yes. Feng shui uses the same five elements to balance rooms, colors, shapes and directions. Our feng shui guide shows how each element appears in a home.
