Almost every spiritual tradition on Earth speaks of beings of light who stand between the human and the divine. They carry messages, guard the faithful, guide nations, and hold the order of creation. We call them angels, and the great ones among them archangels.

But there is far more to the angelic realm than a single kind of winged helper. Ancient teachers described a vast hierarchy, with nine orders of angels arranged in three spheres, from the blazing Seraphim who surround the Divine to the gentle guardian who walks beside you today. Mystics, saints and modern channelers have all mapped parts of it.

This guide is the full map. You will find the nine choirs of angels, the major archangels and what each one is known for, how different traditions see them, the difference between angels, spirit guides and ascended masters, and practical ways to open a relationship with your own angels.

Key Takeaways

  • Angels are beings of light and divine messengers. The word comes from the Greek angelos, meaning “messenger.”
  • Tradition describes nine choirs of angels in three spheres: Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones; Dominions, Virtues and Powers; Principalities, Archangels and Angels.
  • Archangels are the great angelic leaders. Many traditions name seven, including Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel.
  • Every person is said to have at least one guardian angel, a personal companion who stays with you through life.
  • Angels are not the same as spirit guides or ascended masters, who were once human. Angels belong to a separate line of creation.
  • You can ask for angelic help at any time. Angels respond to sincere invitation, and they honor free will.

What Are Angels?

Angels are intelligent beings of light who serve the divine plan. The tradition of the angels is among the oldest in the world. They appear in the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, the Quran, the Zoroastrian scriptures, the Book of Enoch, and in the near-death accounts of people from every culture. See our glossary entries on angels and archangels.

The common thread is that angels are messengers and guardians. In most teachings they never lived a human life. They are a separate order of creation whose nature is service, praise and protection. They move between the worlds, between the seen and the unseen, carrying the will of the Divine to Earth and the prayers of Earth back to the Divine.

Angels and Free Will

One principle appears in almost every account: angels do not override your free will. They guide, nudge, comfort and protect, but they wait to be invited. This is why so many teachers say the simplest way to receive help is to ask for it.

The Nine Choirs of Angels

The best-known map of the angelic realm comes from a mystic known as Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, who wrote The Celestial Hierarchy around the 5th or 6th century. He described nine orders, called choirs, grouped into three spheres. Saint Thomas Aquinas later adopted this order, and it became the standard Christian view.

SphereChoirPrimary role

AngelsWatch over individual lives as guardians and messengers

The First Sphere: Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones

Seraphim are the highest order. Their name means “the burning ones.” The prophet Isaiah saw them with six wings, crying out “Holy, holy, holy” before the throne. They are pure love and light, and they are said to be so close to the Divine that most humans cannot perceive them.

Cherubim are the keepers of knowledge. In Genesis they guard the gate of Eden with a flaming sword. In Kabbalah they stand for divine wisdom. Popular art often shows them as chubby babies, but the scriptures describe powerful, many-faced beings.

Thrones, also called Ophanim or “wheels,” appear in the prophet Ezekiel’s vision as great wheels within wheels, full of eyes. They carry the seat of divine authority and are connected with justice and the steadiness of the cosmos.

The Second Sphere: Dominions, Virtues and Powers

Dominions govern. They manage the work of the lower angels and carry out the order of the universe. Leadership, humility and right authority are their gifts.

Virtues are the angels of grace and miracles. Tradition links them with courage, with healing and with the movement of nature. When something happens that seems beyond explanation, Virtues are often credited.

Powers are the warrior choir. They guard the boundary between light and dark and keep the world in balance. They are protectors of souls and of the cosmos.

The Third Sphere: Principalities, Archangels and Angels

Principalities oversee groups of people: nations, cities and organizations. Many traditions say every country, and every great gathering of people, has a guiding presence of this kind.

Archangels are the great messengers and the leaders of the host. They carry the large announcements, such as the message to Mary. We cover them in detail below.

Angels are the closest order to human life. This is the choir of guardian angels, the personal helpers who accompany each soul. When people say “an angel helped me,” this is usually the choir they mean.

Where Each Choir Appears in Scripture

The nine choirs were assembled from names scattered across the Bible. Paul lists several of them in his letters, and the prophets describe others in their visions.

ChoirScriptureWhat the text says
SeraphimIsaiah 6:2 to 3Six-winged beings who cry “Holy, holy, holy” before the throne
CherubimGenesis 3:24, Ezekiel 10Guardians of Eden and bearers of the divine chariot
ThronesColossians 1:16, Ezekiel 1Listed among the heavenly powers, linked to the wheels of Ezekiel’s vision
DominionsColossians 1:16, Ephesians 1:21Named among the ranks created through Christ
VirtuesEphesians 1:21Drawn from the Greek word for “power” or “might”
PowersEphesians 6:12, Colossians 1:16Spiritual authorities, both light and dark
PrincipalitiesRomans 8:38, Ephesians 6:12Rulers of the spiritual order
Archangels1 Thessalonians 4:16, Jude 1:9The voice of the archangel, and Michael contending for the body of Moses
AngelsPsalm 91:11, Hebrews 1:14Ministering spirits sent to serve those who inherit salvation

Who Are the Archangels?

The word archangel means “chief angel” or “ruling angel.” Archangels are the great leaders of the angelic host. In the traditional order they sit in the eighth choir, but their influence reaches across all of creation. They carry the largest messages, oversee the work of many angels at once, and can be called on by anyone, anywhere, at the same moment.

The Seven Archangels

Many traditions speak of seven archangels. The ancient Book of Enoch names them as Uriel, Raphael, Raguel, Michael, Sariel, Gabriel and Remiel. The Book of Tobit has Raphael declare that he is “one of the seven” who stand before the glory of God. The Book of Revelation also speaks of seven angels at the throne.

Only three archangels are named in the common Christian Bible, Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. Other traditions and modern teachers add Uriel and several more, which is why the lists differ from one source to another.

Archangel Michael

Michael is the most famous of all the archangels, the great defender and the captain of the heavenly army. The prophet Daniel calls him “the great prince,” and the Book of Revelation shows him leading the angels in the war against the dragon. He is the patron of the protective and the brave.

People ask Michael for protection of the home, the family and the self. Many picture him with a blue flame and a sword of light that cuts through fear and negative attachment. Read our entry on Archangel Michael.

Archangel Gabriel

Gabriel is the messenger. It was Gabriel who told Zechariah that he would father John the Baptist, and who announced to Mary that she would bear Jesus. In Islam, Jibril revealed the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad.

Gabriel is the angel of communication, of the creative arts, and of anything that is being born, whether a child, a book or a new chapter of life. See Archangel Gabriel.

Archangel Raphael

Raphael appears in the Book of Tobit as a traveling companion who heals Tobit’s blindness and guides his son safely home. His name means “God heals.” He is the archangel of healing in body, mind and spirit, and the patron of travelers and of those who care for the sick.

Many people picture Raphael with green light. Learn more about Archangel Raphael.

Archangel Uriel

Uriel is the angel of light and wisdom. In the Book of Enoch he shows the prophet the movements of the heavens. Seekers turn to Uriel for understanding in confusing times and for practical insight into what to do next. Hear Uriel’s message in the Next Level Soul conversation with Leanne Thomas, and read about Archangel Uriel.

Zadkiel, Jophiel, Chamuel and the Rest

Zadkiel is the angel of mercy, the keeper of the violet flame that transforms heavy energy into light. He is closely linked with Saint Germain. Jophiel brings beauty and wisdom to the mind. Chamuel opens the heart and restores peace in relationships. Raguel keeps fairness and harmony among all beings.

Metatron and Sandalphon

In Jewish mysticism, Metatron is the highest of the angels, often called the scribe of heaven, and is said to have once been the prophet Enoch. His twin, Sandalphon, is said to stand on Earth and carry human prayers upward. Hear more about Metatron in the Next Level Soul conversations with Robert Edward Grant and Amanda Ellis.

Sandalphon

Sandalphon is the twin of Metatron in Jewish mystical tradition. Legend describes him as an enormously tall angel whose feet rest on Earth and whose head reaches into the heavens. He is the gatherer of human prayers, weaving them into garlands and lifting them to the Divine. One Kabbalistic legend says he was once the prophet Elijah. Musicians and those who pray with song often call on him.

Ariel

Ariel’s name means “lioness of God.” Modern teachers associate Ariel with the natural world, with animals, and with the healing of the Earth. People ask Ariel for help with environmental causes, with pets, and with finding the courage to speak up for what they love.

Haniel

Haniel is the angel of grace and joy, a name often rendered “grace of God.” In angelic teaching, Haniel is linked with intuition, with the moon and with the feminine, receptive side of spiritual life. Seekers call on Haniel for emotional balance, for serenity and for confidence in their inner knowing.

Raguel

Raguel is one of the seven archangels named in the Book of Enoch, the angel who “takes vengeance on the world of the luminaries.” Today he is more often known as the angel of justice, fairness and harmony. People ask Raguel for peace in disputes, healthy teamwork and fair resolution.

Raziel and Azrael

Raziel, “secrets of God,” is the keeper of divine mysteries in Jewish mysticism. The legendary Book of Raziel the Angel is said to hold the secrets of the universe. Azrael, “whom God helps,” is the angel who accompanies souls through the passage of death. In Islam he is called Izra’il. Many people who have sat at a deathbed describe a gentle, comforting presence, and call on Azrael for peace in grief. See our guide to the death doula and deathbed visions.

The Seven Archangels and the Seven Rays

In the Ascended Master and Theosophical teachings, each archangel presides over one of seven rays of divine light, and is paired with a divine complement called an archeia. These ray correspondences are part of the Summit Lighthouse and related teachings, and they are not part of the older Jewish or Christian tradition.

The Ten Ranks of Kabbalah

Jewish tradition counts ten ranks of angels, listed by the philosopher Maimonides. Later Kabbalah linked each rank to one of the ten Sephirot on the Tree of Life.

RankNameLinked Sephirah
1Chayot ha-Kodesh, the holy living creaturesKeter
2Ophanim, the wheelsChokhmah
3Erelim, the valiant onesBinah
4Hashmallim, the radiant onesChesed
5Seraphim, the burning onesGevurah
6Malakim, the messengersTiferet
7Elohim, the divine beingsNetzach
8Bene Elohim, the sons of GodHod
9CherubimYesod
10Ishim, the souls of fireMalkuth

The names and ranks differ, but the heart of the teaching is the same everywhere: the divine reaches the human world through beings of light who serve with love.

Guardian Angels

The belief in a personal guardian is one of the most loved parts of the angelic tradition. The Psalms say that God “will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus speaks of the angels of the little ones who always see the face of the Father. Early Christian teachers concluded that each person has an angel assigned from birth.

Many people who have had near-death experiences describe meeting such a presence. Lorna Byrne, who has spoken of seeing angels since childhood, describes guardian angels as beings who stay close to every person, even those who have forgotten them.

Common Signs Your Angels Are Near

  • Feathers appearing in unexpected places, especially during a moment of worry or prayer.
  • Repeating numbers such as 111, 444 or 1111. See our guide to angel numbers.
  • Sudden warmth, tingling or a sense of being held in a quiet moment.
  • Synchronicities that arrive at the exact right moment. Read about synchronicity.
  • A clear inner nudge to take a different road, call someone or wait.
  • Dreams of light, wings or luminous guides.
  • Fragrance with no source, like flowers or incense.

Famous Angel Encounters in the Bible

Scripture is full of angelic meetings. These are some of the best known.

Jacob’s ladderGenesis 28Jacob dreams of angels ascending and descending between Earth and heaven
Daniel in the lions’ denDaniel 6:22An angel shuts the mouths of the lions

Angels, Spirit Guides and Ascended Masters

These three kinds of helper are often confused. Here is the simple difference.

TypeOriginRoleLearn more
Angels and archangelsA separate order of creation that has never lived as a humanServe the divine plan, protect, deliver messages and guideThis guide
Spirit guidesSouls who have lived on Earth or are connected to your soul familyPersonal teachers who help with your life lessonsSpirit guides guide
Ascended mastersHumans who completed their Earth lessons and rose into masteryGuide humanity and teach the path of awakeningAscended Masters guide

The three work together. An angel may bring protection, a guide may bring a lesson, and a master may bring a teaching. They are one team seen from three sides.

How to Connect With Your Angels

  1. Quiet your mind. Sit for a few minutes and breathe slowly. Angels speak in the stillness beneath thought.
  2. Ask clearly. Call on your guardian angel or a specific archangel by name. Say what you need, in your own words.
  3. Say thank you. Gratitude opens the channel and strengthens the bond.
  4. Stay open to the answer. It may come as a thought, a feeling, a sign or a coincidence in the hours and days that follow.
  5. Keep a journal. Write down your requests and what happens. Patterns appear quickly.
  6. Act on what you receive. Angels guide, but you walk the path.

A Simple Invocation

You can use words like these: “Beloved guardian angel, I ask for your help and guidance today. Show me the next step. Thank you for always being with me.” There is no required formula. Sincerity matters more than wording.

How to Tell a True Angelic Presence

Not every inner voice is an angel, and discernment matters. Traditions agree on a few reliable marks.

  • Peace, not fear. Angelic guidance carries calm and warmth. If you feel pressure, panic or urgency, pause.
  • Love as the tone. The message supports your highest good and the good of others.
  • Respect for free will. Angels invite. They do not demand, flatter or command obedience.
  • Consistency over time. True guidance fits with your deeper values and holds steady.
  • Good fruit. Look at what the guidance leads to. If it leads to more kindness, courage and clarity, that is a good sign.

It also helps to ask in the name of the highest light, and to ground yourself with a few slow breaths before listening.

Healing for yourself or someone elseRaphael
Help finding the right words, or starting something newGabriel

Short Invocations for Each Archangel

  • Michael: “Archangel Michael, surround me with your blue light and keep me safe.”
  • Gabriel: “Archangel Gabriel, help me find the right words and begin with confidence.”
  • Raphael: “Archangel Raphael, bring your healing light to me and to those I love.”
  • Uriel: “Archangel Uriel, illuminate my path and show me the next step.”
  • Zadkiel: “Archangel Zadkiel, transform what weighs on me with the violet flame.”
  • Chamuel: “Archangel Chamuel, fill my heart with peace and show me love.”
  • Jophiel: “Archangel Jophiel, awaken beauty and clear thinking in me.”
  • Azrael: “Archangel Azrael, comfort those who grieve and those who are passing.”

Use your own words as well. The intention behind a prayer matters more than the exact phrase.

Common Misunderstandings

  • “Angels are only for religious people.” Angels are honored in every major tradition and are described by people with no religious background.
  • “Angels become angels after we die.” In most teachings, angels are a separate order of being. Loved ones who pass are souls, not angels.
  • “Only special people can contact them.” Anyone can ask. The invitation is the key.
  • “Angels have a fixed appearance.” Scripture describes them in many forms, from radiant human figures to wheels of fire. Most people sense them rather than see them.
