What if the biggest thing standing between you and the life you want is not your circumstances, but a belief you have never looked at? That question sits at the heart of the work of Joe Vitale, the author and marketer who became one of the best-known teachers in the film The Secret. The Attractor Factor with Joe Vitale brings his ideas to the screen, and it is available on Next Level Soul. The trailer above gives you a first look.
This guide goes much further than a review. It tells his story, walks through his books with links to each one, looks at his role in The Secret, explains the Hawaiian practice of Ho’oponopono that he helped bring to a wide audience, and offers a practice you can try today.
Who Is Joe Vitale?
Joe Vitale was born on December 29, 1953, in Niles, Ohio. He went to Niles McKinley High School and then to Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. His working life began with words. He moved to Houston, Texas, and built a career as a copywriter, the person who writes the sentences that make people stop, read and act.
His clients over the years included the Red Cross, PBS and Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, along with many businesses. That detail matters, because it explains his teaching style. Vitale did not come to the Law of Attraction from a monastery. He came to it from the practical world of persuasion, where you learn quickly that what people believe shapes what they do.
In his own telling, he is a man who has lived at both ends of the money spectrum, and who is more interested in what works than in what sounds impressive. That tone, direct and a little mischievous, runs through everything he has made.
From Copywriter to Hypnotic Marketer
Before the spiritual books, there were the marketing books. His early titles include Zen and the Art of Writing (1984) and Hypnotic Writing, a guide to persuading customers with only your words. He followed those with Hypnotic Marketing and Advanced Hypnotic Marketing, and with There’s a Customer Born Every Minute, a book that looks at the marketing lessons of showman P.T. Barnum.
He also recorded audio programs for Nightingale-Conant, the long-running home of personal development audio, including one called The Power of Outrageous Marketing. His own biography describes it as a number one best-selling program. Along the way he picked up a nickname that stuck, “The Buddha of the Internet.”
If you want to understand Vitale, hold two ideas side by side. He believes that words and attention can move people. And he believes that the first person those words need to move is you. The marketing years taught him the first idea. The next chapter of his life turned it inward.
The Attractor Factor: The Book That Changed His Path
In 2005, Wiley published The Attractor Factor: 5 Easy Steps for Creating Wealth (or Anything Else) from the Inside Out. It became a number one bestseller and, by his bio’s count, hit the top of the list twice. The book takes the Law of Attraction, the idea that our thoughts, feelings and focus influence what shows up in our lives, and turns it into a step-by-step method.
What set it apart was its tone. Instead of asking you to simply think happy thoughts, it asks you to look at the beliefs running underneath your thoughts, to set a clear intention, to take inspired action and to let go of the outcome. The book keeps returning to one idea: you are always attracting something, so you might as well find out what.

The Secret: Vitale’s Role in the Film
Then came a cultural moment. The Secret, the film produced by Rhonda Byrne, was released in March 2006 and brought the Law of Attraction to a huge audience. It gathered a group of teachers, authors and philosophers to talk about how thought and intention shape life. Joe Vitale was one of them, and he appears throughout the film.
The attention that followed was enormous. In March 2007, Newsweek ran a story called “Decoding The Secret,” and Vitale was among the teachers featured. For many viewers, he became a friendly face of the movement, a teacher who could explain big ideas in plain words. The Secret is the film that introduced Vitale to millions of viewers.
It is worth saying clearly what The Secret did for the wider conversation. It put questions about intention and belief into living rooms around the world, and it sent many people to the books and teachers behind it. If you came to this topic through the film, this guide is meant to take you a step deeper.
Our own guide to Law of Attraction tips is a practical next step.
Ho’oponopono and Zero Limits
The second great turn in Vitale’s work came through a story he heard about a therapist in Hawaii. The story concerns Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len, who worked at a ward for people deemed criminally insane at Hawaii State Hospital. As the tale is told, Dr. Hew Len never treated his patients in the usual way. Instead, he reviewed their files and worked on himself, using a Hawaiian practice called Ho’oponopono. Over time, the story goes, the patients improved and the ward eventually closed.
Vitale heard the story, tracked down Dr. Hew Len, and eventually studied with him. The result was Zero Limits: The Secret Hawaiian System for Wealth, Health, Peace, and More, written with Dr. Hew Len and published by Wiley in 2007. Its central idea is that you are responsible for what appears in your life, not as a matter of blame, but as a matter of opportunity. If something troubles you, the practice is to clean it from the inside.
The cleaning is simple. You repeat four phrases: I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you. You do not need to know what you are apologizing for. You are not saying the words to anyone else. You are using them to clear your own inner space, which is why Vitale describes the state he is aiming for as “zero,” a place with no limiting memory or belief.
Ho’oponopono has older roots in Hawaiian culture, where it is a practice of making things right between people. The version Vitale teaches draws on the modern approach developed by Morrnah Simeona and carried forward by Dr. Hew Len. Vitale later wrote a follow-up, At Zero: The Final Secrets to “Zero Limits,” the Quest for Miracles Through Ho’oponopono, published in 2013.
You can find both here: Zero Limits on Amazon and At Zero on Amazon.
Vitale also sat down with Alex Ferrari to talk about the practice. You will find that conversation further down this page, and the full episode here: Transform Your Life with Ho’Oponopono with Joe Vitale.

Where the Law of Attraction Comes From
The ideas Vitale teaches did not begin with The Secret. They grow out of a long stream of American and European thought sometimes called New Thought, which holds that mind and belief shape experience. Writers such as Prentice Mulford in the nineteenth century and Wallace Wattles, whose The Science of Getting Rich appeared in 1910, gave the idea its early shape. Napoleon Hill carried it forward in Think and Grow Rich in 1937, and Florence Scovel Shinn offered a gentler, more prayerful take in The Game of Life and How to Play It.
What Vitale added was the voice of a working marketer. He knew how persuasion and attention worked in the outer world, and he applied that knowledge to the inner one. That is why his books feel practical. They treat the mind as something you can train, test and adjust.
If you would like to read some of those older voices on Next Level Soul, start with Think and Grow Rich and The Game of Life and How to Play It, both available on Next Level Soul. For a wider look at how modern manifestation teaching compares with the classic Law of Attraction, see our guide to the difference between the two.
The Big Ideas, Simply Put
Beliefs set the ceiling. What you believe about money, love and success quietly sets the limits of what you attempt. Noticing a belief is the first step in changing it.
Focus shapes perception. What you pay attention to expands in your experience. A practical result is that you begin to notice opportunities that were already there.
Inspired action matters. Vitale is clear that thinking alone is not the whole practice. The Law of Attraction, as he teaches it, asks you to act when an idea or impulse arrives, and to trust that the action is part of the answer.
Clear first, then create. The Ho’oponopono side of his work adds a different note. Before you add more wanting, you can clear what is in the way. Many people find this softer than the goal-setting side, and it pairs well with it.
Expect good things. Several of his titles share one theme: expectation. When you expect a good outcome, you act differently, speak differently and notice more.
Music, Film and Service
Vitale’s creative life goes beyond books. He has released more than fifteen music CDs, with titles including Strut!, The Healing Song and The Great Something. He has appeared in around eighteen films, among them The Secret, The Opus, Leap! and The Compass, and he has taken acting roles as well.
He is also involved with Operation Yes, a program that offers mental and financial support aimed at helping people move out of homelessness. It is a fitting thread for a man who writes so often about the journey from lack to abundance.
The Attractor Factor on Next Level Soul
The series on Next Level Soul brings these ideas to the screen. Its two main threads are limiting beliefs and alignment. Limiting beliefs are the unexamined assumptions that cap what we think is possible. Alignment is the practice of bringing your thoughts, feelings and actions into agreement with what you want to create.
Many Law of Attraction teachings stay in the clouds. This series leans toward the practical, and that is its strength. It treats beliefs as something you can look at, question and change. Vitale’s style is energetic and encouraging, and the pace keeps moving, so it suits viewers who want motivation along with ideas. Each episode circles back to a simple question: what are you telling yourself, and is it serving you?
If you are new to the topic, the series is an accessible introduction. If you have studied it for years, it is a refresher with a fresh voice.
Key Terms in Plain Language
- Law of Attraction: the idea that your thoughts, feelings and focus influence what shows up in your life.
- Attractor Factor: Vitale’s name for the inner state that draws experiences toward you, built from clear intention, belief, emotion and action.
- Limiting belief: an unexamined assumption that caps what you think is possible, such as “money is hard to come by.”
- Inspired action: a step you take because an idea or impulse feels right, as opposed to forcing a result.
- Ho’oponopono: a Hawaiian practice of setting things right, taught in Vitale’s books through four simple phrases.
- Zero state: the place of inner clarity Vitale describes in Zero Limits, free of limiting memory and belief.
- Hypnotic writing: his term for words that hold attention and move a reader gently toward an action.
Where to Start: A Reading and Viewing Order
Vitale has produced so much that it can be hard to know where to begin. Here is a path that works for most people.
- Watch the trailer and the series. It is the fastest way to learn his voice and his main ideas.
- Read The Attractor Factor. It lays the foundation: intention, belief, action and release.
- Read Zero Limits. It adds the inward, clearing side of the work.
- Choose by interest. For money, try Attract Money Now or The Awakened Millionaire. For meaning, try Life’s Missing Instruction Manual. For writing and business, try Hypnotic Writing.
- Listen to Joe in conversation. His two talks with Alex Ferrari, below, show how the ideas sound in real time.
A Practice: Name the Belief, Then Clear It
Here is a way to try Vitale’s two sides of the work together. It takes about ten minutes.
- Write down one thing you want. Keep it specific and honest.
- Beneath it, write the first doubt that arises. That doubt is a clue to a limiting belief.
- Reframe it. Write one sentence that turns the doubt into something you can accept as possible.
- Clear it. Sit quietly and repeat the four Ho’oponopono phrases slowly: I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you. Let them land without trying to figure anything out.
- Take one small action today that matches what you wrote.
Pair this with a daily moment of gratitude, which keeps attention on what is already working. The power is within you. The series and the books are guides, and the practice is yours.
A Seven-Day Way to Try It
If you would like to turn the ideas into a habit, here is a gentle seven-day plan. It needs only a few minutes a day and a notebook.
Day 1: Notice
Write down three beliefs you hold about money, work or love. Do not judge them. Just notice them.
Day 2: Choose
Pick one want that matters to you. Write it in a single clear sentence.
Day 3: Question
Look at the belief that most gets in the way of that want. Ask, “Is this definitely true?” and write what you find.
Day 4: Reframe
Write a sentence you could believe that points the other way, such as “I am learning to make money in ways I enjoy.” Read it aloud once.
Day 5: Clear
Sit for five minutes with the four Ho’oponopono phrases. Say them slowly, and notice how you feel afterward.
Day 6: Act
Take one small step toward the want. Send the message. Make the call. Start the draft.
Day 7: Give thanks
Write down what shifted during the week, however small. Gratitude keeps attention on what is already moving in the right direction.
Questions People Ask About Ho’oponopono
Do I need to believe in it for it to help? Many people find the phrases calming even before they have a view on the philosophy. Try them for a week and see how you feel.
Who are the phrases addressed to? In Vitale’s teaching, they are not addressed to another person. They are a way to clear your own inner space, and some people direct them to the divine, to life itself or to their own heart.
How long does it take? The practice can take a minute. Many people repeat the phrases during a walk, in the shower or while falling asleep.
Is it the same as the traditional Hawaiian practice? Not exactly. Traditional Ho’oponopono is a family or community process for restoring harmony. The version in Zero Limits is an individual practice drawn from the modern approach of Morrnah Simeona and Dr. Hew Len. Honoring that difference is part of using it well.
Using These Ideas Well
The Law of Attraction is a perspective that invites you to take responsibility for your inner life. Many people find it works best alongside action, patience and self-compassion. Inner work does not replace outer effort. It makes the outer effort clearer.
Vitale himself has spoken about the shadow side of these ideas, including the pull to use them for ego or for blaming yourself when life is hard. If you would like to hear him unpack that, watch his conversation with Alex Ferrari below on the dark side of the Law of Attraction. It is a thoughtful complement to the series.
How to Watch It Well
Take notes, and choose one idea per episode to act on within a day. Keep these questions close:
- What belief about myself might be capping what I try?
- Where do my thoughts and actions point in different directions?
- What small step would I take if I believed it was possible?
Who Will Connect with This Series
It suits anyone curious about the Law of Attraction, readers who loved The Secret and want more depth, people drawn to Ho’oponopono, entrepreneurs and writers who want practical energy, and seekers who like motivation grounded in action.
