Nordic runes are the angular letters of the early Germanic peoples, and the 24 symbols of the Elder Futhark are the oldest known runic alphabet. Beyond writing, runes became symbols of power, protection and fate, and today many people use them as a form of divination, a way to ask questions and listen for inner guidance.

This guide explains where runes come from, what each of the 24 Elder Futhark runes means, how the three aetts organize them, how to cast them and how to read them with a grounded mind. If tools like this interest you, you may also enjoy our guides to tarot cards and intuition development.

Key Takeaways

  • What runes are. The 24 Elder Futhark runes are the oldest known runic alphabet, used from about the 2nd century CE.
  • Three aetts. The runes are grouped into three families of eight: foundations, challenge and change, and spirit and fulfillment.
  • A modern oracle. Casting runes as divination was popularized in the 20th century, and the blank rune is a modern addition.
  • How to cast. Set an open question, draw one or three runes, read the meaning and journal your response.
  • A mirror, not a verdict. Use runes to reflect and listen inward. The answer you trust comes from within.

What Are Nordic Runes?

Runes are the characters of several early Germanic alphabets, used for roughly a thousand years across Scandinavia and northern Europe. The oldest, the Elder Futhark, has 24 characters and takes its name from its first six letters: f, u, th, a, r and k. Inscriptions in this alphabet date from about the 2nd century CE. Around the Viking Age, Scandinavians simplified it into the 16-character Younger Futhark.

The word rune is linked with an old Germanic root meaning secret or mystery. That is part of why runes carry an air of magic: they were both letters and symbols, and each one has a name and a meaning.

Where Runes Come From: History and Myth

Norse myth gives runes a sacred origin. In the poem Hávamál, the god Odin hangs from the world tree for nine nights, wounded and without food, and at the end he takes up the runes with a cry. The story presents rune wisdom as something won through sacrifice and deep inner seeking.

History is quieter. Runes appear on stones, weapons, jewelry and everyday objects. The Roman writer Tacitus, in his Germania (about 98 CE), describes Germanic peoples casting marked slips of wood to seek answers, and some people see this as an ancestor of rune casting. The meanings we use today come largely from three medieval rune poems, Old English, Norwegian and Icelandic, which give each rune a short verse.

It is worth being honest about the modern practice. Using runes as an oracle, much like tarot, was popularized in the 20th century. Ralph Blum’s 1982 book The Book of Runes brought it to a wide audience and added a blank rune that does not appear in the historical alphabet. Many practitioners use or skip it. What matters is how the symbols help you reflect.

The 24 Elder Futhark Runes and Their Meanings

The runes are traditionally divided into three groups of eight called aetts, each named for a Norse deity. Meanings below follow the rune poems and common modern usage. Teachers vary, so treat them as starting points.

How to Cast and Read Nordic Runes

You can make a set from stones, wood or clay, or buy one. The method is simple and the real work is in the questions you bring.

  1. Set an intention. Choose an open question such as, What do I need to understand about this chapter? Avoid yes or no questions.
  2. Center yourself. Take three slow breaths and hold your runes for a moment.
  3. Draw one, three or more. One rune offers a daily theme. Three runes can be read as past, present and future, or as situation, challenge and guidance.
  4. Read the symbol and your reaction. Start with the common meaning, then notice what the rune stirs in you.
  5. Write it down. Journaling turns a symbol into insight and helps you see patterns over time.

Some runes are traditionally read differently when they appear upside down, called merkstave. Others, such as Isa and Dagaz, look the same either way. If reversals feel confusing, begin by reading every rune upright.

Runes as a Tool for Intuition, Not a Verdict

A rune cast does not decide your future. It gives you a mirror. Dr. Dean Radin, a researcher who studies consciousness, describes divination as perceiving through space and time, and he groups magical practice into divination, force of will and theurgy. Whatever you make of that, many seekers find that a simple symbol can open a door to what they already sense.

Psychic and intuitive Colette Baron-Reid, who works with oracle cards, talks about finding certainty inside yourself during uncertain times. That idea fits runes well. The stones can prompt you, and the answer you trust comes from within.

If you feel pulled to explore your own patterns more deeply, runes pair well with other reflective practices such as astrology, meditation and journaling.
